| Interests | Around the globe, there are memories from years and years of war and disasters, for instance in forms of large amounts of left over ammunitions and pollutants in the environment. Taking care of these left overs is expensive and very dangerous business, but with joined forced, a huge work has started to solve these problems. But with most of the methods, there are still contaminants left. It can be process waste water, sludge or soil from surrounding lands which are polluted with explosives. These explosives are toxic to humans and the environment and can cause cancer. The project BIOREX aims to develop and find new methods for separation and degradation of explosives. The technique is based on training of bacteria in the laboratory, to survive and use the explosives for their metabolism. The process will be optimized by using a large scale bioreactor. The use of low cost sorbents, a by product from the industries in Sweden is also looked into for separation of explosive contaminants from waste water. The experiments are conducted in the laboratory at Mälardalen University and at the factory site of Nammo Vingåkersverken AB. |
