Introduction Robert A. Saunders (PhD in Global Affairs, Rutgers University) specializes in the history and politics of Eastern Europe, Russia & Central Asia, and the Muslim world. His articles have appeared in Nations and Nationalism, Slavic Review, Nationalism & Ethnic Politics, Identities: Global Studies in Power and Culture, Albanian Journal of Politics, East Asia: An International Quarterly, and Global Media and Communication. He has also published chapters in edited volumes from Columbia University Press, Routledge, and other internationally-known imprints. Based his extensive work on Kazakhstan’s feud with the British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen over the film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, Harper’s labeled him the ‘world’s leading Boratologist’ in 2006. His forthcoming book on the subject is entitled The Many Faces of Sacha Baron Cohen: Politics, Ethnic Pantomime, and the Battle over Borat (Lexington Books, 2008). Dr. Saunders is currently completing work on his manuscript The Web of Identity: Minority Nationalism and Ethnopolitics in Cyberspace which is to be published by Berghahn Books.
