| Interests | I've always loved food. My Dad taught me how to cook eggs, and I picked up how to cook simple breakfasts from watching my Mom in the kitchen as a wee lad. But I never tried to get into cooking much; there just wasn't any room for another cook in my family's kitchen. The chance came during my sojourn in New Haven. Bored out of gourd, I flipped to the Food Network. Lo and behold, there was a Japanese chef, by the name of Hiroyuki Sakai - the delecroix of french cuisine. He was cooking up a storm during a Beef Battle episode of Iron Chef. Wow. My mouth watered, and I started taking notes during commercials. I started watching that channel almost religously, until I mustered up enough courage to break in my kitched and use my stove for something other than frying frozen foods. Finally free of the shackles of traditional egyptian home cooked meals, I began to experiment and learnt some basics. I got into some bad habits (using waaaay too much butter) and made some classic mistakes (overcooked steaks, marinades with soy sauce AND balsamic vinegar), but it was when I moved back to Cairo that "The Hunger", as I've now come to call it, took on a whole new form. |
