| Introduction | I am an Asian American non profit professional. I grew up in Chinatown in a three room apt, my parents moved us to Queens when I was nine for fear that the gangs would take my younger brother. I often think about the influences of my upbringing and how I can trace my current state back to those early experiences as the first generation and first born child to immigrant parents. I continue to have trouble reconciling my role as a good "daughter", modern woman, career gal and general wize ass. Turns out many of my Asian friends are in the same boat. Therapy is not considered acceptable in Chinese and most Asian cultures, but never the less I needed help and spent years in it. I don't know if I've resolved anything but perhaps more I am more self aware but still a wise ass. Still I wonder.. where are the support groups? This is America..aren't there support groups for everything? After some ok, alot of thought, I've started this blog to share my own experiences and to hear about others as well. |
