IntroductionDr. James V. Baker is widely known in the banking industry as the father of asset/liability management. His pioneering book Asset/Liability Management was published by the American Bankers Association (ABA) and set sales records both in the United States and Japan. His methodological approach to interest rate risk management became generally accepted and utilized by regulators and financial institutions worldwide. He served on the ABA’s Commercial Lending and Investment Division executive committees. He was a faculty member of the ABA National Commercial Lending, Installment Lending, and Investment Schools. He was also Chairman of the ABA’s Certified Commercial Lender accreditation program. Dr. Baker educated thousands of bankers and received numerous industry awards for his service and contributions. In the late 1980s, Dr. Baker also had his own family of mutual funds, The Baker Funds. The Baker Equity Fund sold all its stocks days prior to the October 1987 crash. Baker has had a distinguished and varied career as a commercial banker, investment banker, city treasurer, investment adviser, NASD arbitrator, consultant, and university professor.
