| Introduction | I was born in a small town surrounded by even smaller villages in Thuringia. Early on I was influenced by American movies and TV shows. The vastness of the landscape and the lifestyle of the people were a very welcome distraction from my mundane day-to-day activities. My interest in American politics started, just like for many others of my generation, with the 2008 Presidential Elections and the man that captured the world’s attention, Barack Obama. At the time it seemed like a completely new beginning and I was fascinated by the news coverage of him, his opponents, and their debates. Therefore, I started researching ways to pursue a career related to the United States. Naturally, after graduating high school in 2012, I was thrilled to be accepted to the American studies program at Leipzig University. Since then I have been able to deepen my knowledge in US culture and social structures as well as their intricate politics.For my time in Ohio I am looking forward to diving into fields that are still underrepresented in Germany, like Gender and Women's Studies. Of course, I also can't wait to experience a real American college and all the excitement the goes along with that. |
