IntroductionIN MATH - If you draw a circle around a triangle, the tangent (or the rise divided by the run) is the line that skims (or touches) the outside of the circle once at the point (1,0). We call it the "tangent" because it comes from the Latin word, "Tangere", which means, "to touch". A tangent is also refered to in calculus as a line which 'touches' a curve at a point; it is found in that case to also be the 'derivative'. IN COMUNICATION - The tangent is usually an expressed idea which only "touches on" the main theme of a conversation. A tangent is often referred to as a "Rabbit Trail", which, to my knowledge at least, has little to do with the relationship between an angle and the line which intersects the circle enscribed around it unless, of course, there is some hidden poetic meaning in a rabbit rising from his hole and running down a trail.
