IntroductionI came to sustainability by accident: literally I just wanted a job in Sydney! But fundamentally I don’t believe anything happens completely by accident. There is always some kind of intelligent design behind all that happens, and my case, sustainability epitomises that. I believe the problem with sustainability is that so many people think of it as a false dichotomy; green things (people, activities, businesses etc) and not green things. The job I took which got me into sustainability was as a policy adviser for a business association. My main claim to fame was moving sustainability from a periphery to central issue. This included lobbying to adopt a proactive position on climate change. I bring a practical passion to the topic and can be often heard saying “…it’s not all about the environment!”, because, quite literally, it has more to do with innovation than the environment. I combine this with a good knowledge of climate change and its impact on business and the economy as a whole. The key challenge is to decouple our economic prosperity and emissions growth. Fundamentally this is an economic challenge, not an environmental challenge.
