Introduction Artists and artisans have long been inspired by the plant world: imitating, celebrating and manipulating the very substance itself. For centuries plant images have adorned domestic artefacts, clothes and furniture; they have inspired elaborate floor coverings and wall decorations, and have also been used to embellish buildings both humble and grand. Contemporary scientific practice enables us to see hitherto hidden worlds of fascinating structures at a microscopic level. Extending this long and illustrious history of artists working with flowers and plants, the work reveals a hidden world lying beyond the scope of the human eye. Working in collaboration with botanical scientists at Kew, I have created an extensive collection of images derived from pollen, seeds and fruit that lie somewhere between science and symbolism, in which the many complexities of representing plants are concentrated into mesmeric visual statements.
