| Favorite books | Tolstoy and PG Wodehouse, "Anna Karenina" and any of the Bertie Wooster books. John Williams ("Stoner") has gone to the top of my list in the past few years. But my heroes are scholars like David McCullough ("John Adams"), Stephen Greenblatt ("The Swerve"), Kenneth Silverman ("Life and Times of Cotton Mather"), David Reynolds ("John Brown, Abolitionist"), Brenda Wineapple ("Hawthorne, a Life")--and a host of others. An all-purpose prose master like John McPhee makes my list too, as does the great Arkansas poet Miller Williams. And finally, I connect most often and most completely with the words of the multi-talented poet John Ciardi. |
