| Introduction | Reina is Spanish for Queen, but I am neither. I was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but never lived there. If you ask me where I'm from I could not tell you except to say that I belong everywhere and nowhere at once, a citizen of the world and at the same time, the perpetual outsider looking in. My father was a U.S. diplomat and we moved like nomads across continents and oceans alike: Burma, Brazil, Curacao, The Netherlands, Germany, The Philippines and Trinidad & Tobago. My mother collected artwork from every far-flung region we located to. Each piece told a story of a place and a time, of a people and a culture... they were my memories. This is what has brought me to love art as I do now. My obsession with pop culture at the same time grew from a longing to fit-in with my American peers and so hours would be devoted to devouring every U.S. magazine I could get my hands on, any glimpse of MTV I could see, any product which as if through contagious magic would make me more American. Join me as I navigate through LaLa Land and the cyber-jungle, collaging a journal of everything from the mundane to the sublime. |
