| Introduction | A former newsman and an accomplished professional translator, Abukar did numerous translation work for a number of international organizations in Somalia, including the UN and USAID. After coming to the US in 2001, the author continued doing translations for a number of institutions including the world-famous Mayo Clinic. He also contributed articles in both English and Somali to Minnesota-based Somali newspapers. In Minnesota, Abukar was a co-founder of the Somali American Democratic Association which helped sensitize and motivate the Somali Community to play a significant role in the 2004 US elections. Abukar who was largely self-educated is now retired and lives in the Minnesota capital of Saint Paul. He has 4 sons, 3 daughters and 6 grandchildren. |
