| Introduction | When I was two years-old, I fell asleep with an open jar of eastern tent caterpillars. They slipped out of the jar and crawled all over me and my bed. My mother gingerly gathered each caterpillar and returned it to the jar. Later I discovered a tiny creek in my neighborhood and became hooked on catching salamanders and crayfish. Soon I fell in love with snakes, lizards, frogs and turtles. I've been a nonstop naturalist ever since. Today I live on an island between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. As an educator of young children, I am committed to fostering lifelong connections with the natural world. I have a BA in Zoology from UNC-Chapel Hill and am currently pursuing an MFA in Nature Writing from Chatham University. My thesis focuses on the nexus between my life and the ecology of the Cape Fear River. My husband, Terry, and I have two daughters who live in California. |
