| Introduction | Nigel Slack. I'm a 55 year old citizen of Sheffield. I use the term 'active citizen' to describe myself as someone who is busy in the city's civic society. I try, where I can, to make a difference, to provide a public point of view on the way decisions are made and influenced. I was switched back on to politics following the emergence of the 'Occupy' movement worldwide and particularly in Sheffield. I began to realise that we have lots of information in this world but often little knowledge to make sense of the 'system'. One news story about the City Council congratulating a profit making big bus company on securing public funds to invest in new buses, from which it would make yet more profit made me wonder 'why?'. I took my first step on this road to a better understanding of local politics, decision making and influence. Now I'm excited to try and take this to a new level. |
