| Introduction | I am married, mother of six grown children and grandmother of five little ones. I completed my Ph.D at Michigan State in 2002 in composition theory. My dissertation was based on a qualitative study that examined the role of drawing in the writing process of five non-traditional community college students. I retired in 2004 and have focused on many kinds of art and writing since then. I just spent two months substitute teaching in my daughter's high school keyboard and steel band classes in Palm Coast, Florida while she was on maternity leave. Now I am exploring the many things I learned there, and researching for a book I want to write on steel bands for high school aged students. I grew up in Kentucky and have lived in Michigan since graduating from college. I hope to leave the snow behind and return to my roots someday soon. The Assembly for Expanded Perspectives in Learning is one of my favorite organizations; that's why I agreed to serve as secretary. I have explored and facilitated workshops on the connections between art/writing/and/healing. |
| Interests | Writing, art, music, books on many subjects that change constantly. Currently I am fascinated with steel band music, history, and Trinidad. Travel. Printmaking, pottery, artist books, film-making. I am happily exploring all the things on my post retirement list. |
| Favorite movies | Too many to name. Or to be honest, I can't really keep all their names separate any longer. |
| Favorite music | Steel band (Andy Narell, for example), slow jazz, folk (I'm still a Joan Baez fan), New Age piano and other instruments. |
| Favorite books | Again, too many to mention. Authors--Wendell Berry, Mary Oliver, William Stafford, award winning children and young adult books on many topics. |
