Introduction I’m a farmer turned folk musician turned author of picture books,poetry,and a novel in poems for teens (I am 1/2 poet, 1/2 author, 1/2 not good at fractions.) My new picture book is MORE THAN ENOUGH--A Passover Story (Dial). My novel GIRL COMING IN FOR A LANDING (Knopf) won the Myra Cohn Livingston Poetry Award; Penn State’s Lee Bennett Hopkins Honor Award for Children’s Poetry. NEW YEAR AT THE PIER—A Rosh Hashanah Story, illustrated by Stephané Jorisch (Dial), won the Sydney Taylor Gold Book Award for Younger Readers given by the Association of Jewish Libraries. I’ve won SCBWI's Magazine Merit Award for Poetry seven times; my CD of stories and poetry won the National Parenting Publications Gold Award for Storytelling. I co-founded the political organization, Authors Illustrators for Children (aiforc.org), I am a founding member of the Children’s Authors Network (childrensauthorsnetwork.com); I blog with five fabulous childrens' authors who also teach at TeachingAuthors.com. I’ve visited schools around the world and have been an instructor with UCLA Extension’s Writers’ Program for over a 16 years.
Interests Animals I can cuddle!, Hiking! Meditating! Writing (of course!) Answering Email (is this technically an interest or a full-time job?)Political activism--saving the world one email at a time.
Favorite Music folk music, classical piano music and more
Favorite Books Too many! Today's favorite: Each Little Bird That Sings by Deborah Wiles. I just heard it on CDs. The writing heartfelt, detailed, glorious. The story is true and moving. I wish I could write like this!
