| Introduction | "But, you don't look like a librarian! No,really, what do you really do? You don't dress like a librarian." Yes, these are just but some of the few things friends and acquaintances say at one time or another. It amazes me what folks will say to me, what happens when I'm out and about, in movies, in bars, etc.-they even make comments on my eyewear! At work, a friend asked, "Where's your librarian eyeglasses?" Another friend even hated it every time I use the word librarian. Why not use Knowledge Manager or Information Scientist instead? Blahh! At a league party, an expat friend gave me this perplexed look on his face and blurted out, "What are you doing in this party?" "Hey, am not from Mars," I said. From "A Hipper Crowd of Shushers" by Kara Jesella, New York Times, 8 July 2007--Librarians? Aren’t they supposed to be bespectacled women with a love of classic books and a perpetual annoyance with talkative patrons--the ultimate humorless shushers? Not any more. With so much of the job involving technology, with a focus now on finding and sharing information beyond just what is available in books, a new type of librarian is emerging. Yes, dear readers, I am a Librarian. Proud to be one! |
