If mud is dirt plus water, what is clay?
Mud is a mixture of various soils; whereas clay is a specific substance composed of fine grained minerals, usually containing aluminum and silica (which is why it's pliable and can be made into pottery). Or, as Ken explains, mud is more fun to play in, LOL.
