About me

Occupation Painter
Location Twin Cities , MN, United States
Interests Many people ask me how I came to be a painter, woodworker and cabinet maker. My story begins with my grandfather, Ivar. Born in Sweden, he came to America carrying only a few pieces of clothing and his tool box. My grandmother remembers seeing him walk off the boat in Lake City, MN. She said he was a cutie! Soon after he started working as a finish carpenter for his brother and his partner building homes in Minneapolis. He built many of the small corner stores in the neighborhood where I grew up. Have you ever been to the Riverview Theater? Yup, my gramps built that!!! Unfortunately, I never met my grandfather; he passed away when my father was a teenager. I am one of 11 grandchildren, and only two of us were gifted with my grandfather’s woodworking skills. I attended the cabinet making program at Hennepin technical College; a two year and 30 hour a week program. From there, I started my own business finishing furniture for a custom furniture shop. During that time, I also painted the offices and warehouses spaces where I rented space for my workshop. I quickly learned that I could make a lot more money painting interiors than finishing furniture! So, here I am, Kayla Marie Ivarson otherwise known as “The House Doctor!”
