| Introduction | I am a prematurely retired high school English teacher. Premature because I became legally blind in 2000 ten years before I should have become eligible to retire.. It's tough to ask 150 students a day to read and write (authentically) when you can no longer do it yourself. More importantly, creating a community that accepts and supports the writing process becomes gear-stripped when the fragile, delicate emerging writers, who need an even consistent hand, can no longer depend on that happening. When a student needed me to read something and I could not do it, I felt terrible. I felt I was breaking a trust I worked so hard to build. And then there are the migraine headaches caused by trying and failing to stay current with the readings assigned to the students. With the aid of computers and video magnification reading machines I can read and write at a pace I can handle. It is not without obstacles but is functional. |
