Introduction Maya Suess, makes drawings, installations, videos, performances and other mischevious entities. Her performative installations use music and playful aesthetics to expolre identity, sexuality and practical magic. She is a 2011 resident at the 3 Legged Dog new media center in downtown Manhattan, a 2009 fellow at the BRIC/Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn NY, and a recipient of a 2009 Independent Artist’s Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. She has been a previous recipient of multiple Canada Council Travel Grants, an Alternate Resident at Harvestworks Digital Media Center, and has exhibited at AC [Direct Chapel] (NYC); the Center for Architecture (NYC); The Western Front (Vancouver); the Vancouver Art Gallery; The Greater Victoria Art Gallery; Kansai Queer Film Festival (Kansai, Japan); Live Biennial of Performance (Vancouver); The Festival of Original Theatre (Toronto); The London Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, among others. She holds a BFA in Media Arts from Emily Carr Institute, and an MFA in contemporary performance from Simon Fraser University. Born on a small island off the coast of western Canada, today she lives and works between Brooklyn, New York and Toronto, On.
