| Introduction | Those who’ve been in prison have been reduced to stereotypes in society and experience persistent disadvantages and discrimination that few others face. From employment and housing to voting rights and the everyday struggle to avoid being swallowed up by poverty and the stigma of incarceration makes its weight felt. But behind the stereotypes and stigmas, real people live. The legal barriers and sanctions that undergird the stigma are the building blocks of modern-day inequality, keeping millions of deserving people on the fringes of mainstream society.
