| Introduction | I'm a native of Indiana, reared in a small town on the Wabash River. There were more people in my dorm my freshman year at Indiana University than in my hometown of 1200. I spent my teenage years fantasizing about becoming a nurse, having my nose buried in one nurse romance novel after another, intriguing titles like "Nora Was a Nurse" and "Sue Barton, Student Nurse." After only one summer job in a hospital I knew nursing was not for me. Unfortunately, I'd not run across any novels at the county's Carnegie Library entitled, "Mary Was an Electrical Engineer" or "Love in the Law Office." After months of agonizing over THE DECISION, I opted for becoming an English teacher. Considering that in 1969 I knew no females who were any other profession than a nurse or a teacher, a "decision" was a moot point. Since then, I have taught English to junior high and high school students, worked as a writer-editor for the Department of the Interior, served as an education consultant for a school district in Washington State, and finally ended up as a tax collector for the past 21 years. I'm married, mostly happily for 37 years to the same man, have five children and four grandchildren. |
