| Introduction | I live in cottage country in Algonquin Highlands, Ontario with my husband and our 3 little dogs. We have 23 acres of woods with walking and snowmobiling trails weaving throughout. About 2 acres are cleared around our home with many perennial gardens, a large pond with a stream and a waterfall, some newly planted fruiting shrubs (for the birds) and some trees. I began feeding the birds last spring, after seeing my first male goldfinch up close at my friend, Katherine's. Up here I have to bring in the feeders every night (except the odd time I forget) so the black bears don't raid them and break them, which they've done a couple of times. I love to see the bears, but definitely don't want them hanging around, lol. I report my bird sightings on EBird and also participated in Project Feederwatch this past winter. And so, one beautiful, tiny yellow and black bird began my "obsession" with watching my yard birds. |
