Introduction Holbrook's Trunk is the blog of the Georgia Museum of Art, the state's official art museum, located on the University of Georgia campus in Athens. Alfred Heber Holbrook, a retired New York lawyer, founded the museum in 1945, with a gift of 100 American paintings to the university. Holbrook also served as the museum's first director and was an impassioned advocate for its offerings. He passed away in 1974, at the age of 99, working in an emeritus capacity at the museum up to that point. The blog is called Holbrook's Trunk because, in the early years of the museum, he would load up the trunk of his car with paintings and tour them around the state, spreading the gospel of art to all who wanted to hear it. That focus on outreach is an important one for us, and we strive every day to live up to Mr. Holbrook's passion for the visual arts.
