Introduction I have had many chapters in my life. I married young and spent my early years as a zookeeper in California, Hawaii and Oregon. Newly single in the mid 90s, I went back to school and got my bachelor's degree in zoology at Oregon State in Corvallis, relishing the college life in a soup of excitement, wonder and curiosity. With graduation began the era of the sea otter as I returned to my home state of California and spent the next 13 years studying sea otters on the central coast as well as the Channel Islands, the Aleutians, and the Russian Far East, gaining a Master's degree along the way. Now it's time for new adventures: nurturing my artistic roots (both parents were fine artists in southern California), completing research and writing. It has long been a goal to see the rich and diverse landscape of America, and the time has come for that adventure. My traveling companion (and best friend) is my beagle, Harry, who is always game for a car ride and to swim upstream in a river of new smells.

What is the first wild thing you saw this morning?
