| Introduction | My work over the last seven years has mostly concentrated in an identification with animals, although I have had almost no personal interaction with any of the animals portrayed. All have histories in Native North American mythology, but I think of them mostly as animals that share my environment, seen and unseen. Their skins are textiles, and I have learned to work with many fabrics and materials to approximate their appearance. I work with taxidermy forms to construct life size, proportional patterns in fabric. Whenever able I collect coats, bags, and fashions that use fur, leather, teeth, and feathers; repurposing those materials into sculptures of the same animals. It is an upside down taxidermy. And it is borrowing elements of a few worlds and sewing them together. |
