| Introduction | I am a historian teaching at a small state college in the west. I used to listen to loud music but I seem to have developed a taste for roots music as I age. I, however, don't say, "What's that noise?" when I hear other music. I like to listen to happy music when I drive across Kansas because it is such a stark contrast with the place that was once called Bleeding Kansas and is now the home of Fred Phelps. I like irony. |
