| Introduction | I am a writer of non-fiction who completed a memoir project based on her mother's life and her death. She was mentally ill and though this kind of memoir today is a dime a dozen, she was nothing like the glamorous, eccentric mad woman that most books or movies on this subject depict. It is a challenge to write about an "invisible woman" whose life would otherwise disappear... I am an Italian woman stranded in the world, always elsewhere and nowhere, always a stranger everywhere; in addition to writing, I am also a photographer, performance artista and occasional video-maker—and for a few years I tried to be an academic. I enjoyed the intellectual life but found that academia disagreed with me, and I with it. Yet without my studies in Anthropology, Art History and Cultural Theory I could not have written the kind of memoir I am working on now—the point being that no knowledge is ever in vain. |
| Interests | Words in print (and by that I mean fiction and non-fiction), words in music, anthropology, food, the visual arts (which include movies) |
| Favorite movies | Not movies but directors: Scorsese, Rudolph, Wenders, Tarkovsky, Kieslowski, Audiard... |
| Favorite music | Echo & The Bunnymen, Tuxedo Moon, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Marianne Faithfull; Improvised Jazz; Classical... and many others.. |
| Favorite books | Memoirs that blend fact with a poetic style and interesting cultural insights, that are non-sensational in content. Fiction that goes deep into the human psyche and its meanders. |
When you hesitate before hitting snooze on your alarm clock, are you being lazy?
No, I'm just being sleepy, or depressed and can't really face another day
