Introduction "Lynchings in Oklahoma" delivers a powerful series of vignettes of a bitter and nearly forgotten chapter of Oklahoma history. It reconstructs the violent, often deadly encounters between the lawless and the so-called lawful during the territorial and early statehood years. It chronicles the unrestrained racial brutality that frequently raged out of control during those years. You will read of Oklahoma's colorful past, saturated with blood and burning flesh - very different from the oft-portrayed humble beginnings of the state. Violence, ruthlessness, alcohol and the rope played just as an important part as Indian relocation and pioneer settlement in shaping the 46th state. I live and work in Shawnee, OK. I am a tribal member and Director of Tribal Rolls for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Being the descendant of a first-generation Citizen Potawatomi territorial settler, I have developed a unique perspective of the state's history, drawing from obscure subject matter to present Oklahoma in a new and distinctive light.
