Introduction	I have the distinct memory of learning to write essays. Home schooled, I fought with my mother word by word over issues that I can now more eloquently articulate as syntax, diction, and voice. A number of disputes ended with tearing up my composition and calling my father in tears without the words to explain my frustration. He would always respond, “Emilie, it’s very important that you learn how to write.” And I did.
