| Introduction | Starting when I was in the U.S. Army, I have kept what I call a writer's notebook for almost six decades. In the notebook I take notes on what I have read and do commentary on social and political events of note to me. Also, i have been a prolific writer of letters to the editor. My most significant writing achievement has been the publication of a book titled Confess or Die: The Case of William Heirens. Bill Heirens confessed to three murders in Chicago in the mid-1940s. I was the confession analyst on a team looking into whether Heirens had committed any of the murders. Al though our team concluded that Heirens very likely did not commit any of the murders; however, we could not convince either the Illinois Parole Board nor the governor to recommend the release of Heirens or a new trial for him. |
