| Introduction | I am passionate about health, development, the environment and social justice. In 1989 I co-founded the NGOs BODHI and BODHI Australia, today supporting 1 project in South Asia. Recognition of my work includes being named “one of a 100 doctors for the planet” (2009), an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship (2010) and the Tony McMichael public health, ecology and environment award (2018). I have published over 300 scientific articles, book chapters and miscellanea in journals, plus hundreds of pieces in the grey literature and 3 edited or co-edited books, including "Climate Change and Global Health" (CABI, 2014, 2024). I am best known for my integrative writing, concerning the links between neoliberalism, inequality, population growth, conflict and health. I have contributed to five international scientific assessments, in most cases as a dissident. Concerned that neither academics nor the public sufficiently appreciate the immense risk of climate change I was the first Australian contributor to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) to be arrested for civil disobedience, protesting the immorality of Australian coal exports, in 2014.). |
