Introduction | As the title says, I respectfully decline motherhood but enjoy other people’s children and pets, am not a particularly disciplined environmentalist, and never led a youthful life of narcissism for which I need to make amends by having children. I’ve been driving down this one particular road, to toughen up and kick shins, but now that I’ve grown up cool, I’ve got to ditch that car, soften up and be kind to myself. I’m trying to stop downplaying my smarts: I like pop music, fashion, and Modernists. A recovering overachiever, I got my papers from Stanford and Oxford and then wandered into Los Angeles. I’ve been living downtown, Skid Row adjacent, for almost a decade because the lofts beckoned to me. I was raised in the hubbub of tall buildings in Hong Kong and Tokyo before we came home to settle in a sleepy Orange County beach town for my adolescence. Now I’m just a stone’s throw from the excitement of heroin junkies and rampaging fame whores. I write a column for Citizen L.A., a monthly arts and lifestyle magazine. I love cinnamon sugar and small leather goods and telling you stories about my relationships and my quest for the usual things everybody wants...love, beauty, truth. |
