Introduction	Economic and industrial history is an enthusiastic interest of mine, and I feel studying that history is one of the best, but very under-rated, ways to understand and plan for today’s business and social climate. I wrote a few short historical vignettes in the Winter of 2009-10, as an experiment in revealing the business value of being a student of history. Longer than a standard blog post and more self-contained, but not unreadable like an academic paper, my goal was to highlight the common threads between the long-ago and today.
