Introduction I am a former 2nd & 3rd grade teacher turned teacher educator who (most days) loves every aspect of her job. I teach graduate and undergraduate literacy and elementary education courses, work with preservice teachers, and do professional development alongside some pretty amazing teachers. I've always loved books and so when I started teaching, I ditched the basal reader and used real books of all sorts to teach my students how to read. Integrating science and social studies trade books in my literacy instruction was an integral part of my daily instruction. Now that I teach teachers, finding new--and good-- books of all sorts (picture books in particular) is still a passion that almost borders on an obsession. I also have three kids of my own who have grown up surrounded by books--and who have been peppered with questions about whether or not they like certain books. By now, they are critical consumers of the reading materials put in front of them, and I can always depend on three strong opinions about whatever I bring home for them to read. Needless to say, they influence how I see books AND classroom literacy instruction.
