Introduction My name is Joanna and I am mummy to my little HD Hero, Charlie. I am a first time mum and on day one Charlie was taken from the Ulster Hospital to the Royal Victoria Children's Hospital and diagnosed with Hirschsprungs Disease (HD). HD is a rare bowel condition where the ganglion nerve cells have not formed properly and as such the bowel does not push the poo along and it can build up causing constipation. There is also the risk of a bowel infection called Enterocolitis. Charlie had a pull through operation when he was 3months old, which was a success. He pooed and passed wind for 2 weeks post op. Then disaster struck and his bowels stopped. As HD is rare the Drs only know so much about the condition. They don't know why Charlie's bowels aren't working again yet but keep encouraging us to be patient. This little blog is a way for me to document our journey with HD and also to get everything down out of my head, which definitely helps with feeling mentally able to take on HD on a daily basis.
