| Introduction | This trip to Uganda, will be fulfilling a lifetime dream of volunteering as a nurse in Africa. My career choice in nursing and my interest in public health were initially inspired by my travels to Asia and Central America. Working and volunteering in local healthcare settings, that care for marginalized communities, deepened my interest. As I witness, first hand the inequalities that many people face, both at home and abroad, I become more determined to help improve these conditions. As a nurse I have chosen to direct my career towards caring for people who have limited access to health care. My professional goals include continuing my education, by obtaining a Masters Degree in Public Health, and working and volunteering in developing nations. As my experience broadens I am continually reminded that advocating for vulnerable populations requires cultural sensitivity, creativity, and a holistic approach. I know that the more time I spend working with diverse groups of people, in places such as Uganda, the more effective I will be in assisting communities work towards better health. |
