Introduction Past adventures of circumnavigating the UK in a 6.8 metre RIB,(http://taketworibs.blogspot.com) or touring the dramatic Northwest of Australia in a 4X4 might begin to seem like easy options after nearly two weeks of relentless trekking across the Bernese Oberland. Horsepower will be replaced by manpower, and my two size 6's can look forward to receiving as much attention as the most highly tuned Yamaha engine! The last major trekking expedition I undertook was in my twenties around the Annapurna circuit in Nepal, and Anthony and I trekked to Macchu Pichu in the days before the tour buses could disgorge their snap happy "box tickers" on the figurative doorstep. In those days we carried our hideously heavy packs with all our equipment. Fortunately that will not be required this time, with an undoubtedly hugely efficient Swiss transport system dealing with our luggage and leaving us to walk unencumbered. The 25 years of intervening wear and tear are less easily done away with. Fifty, fit and fabulous - or fifty, furious and floundering!? The next two weeks will tell.
