| Introduction | In 1980 my parents left El Salvador as refugees. In 1983 I was born in Mexico. In 1986, we left Mexico and moved to the US. I've lived in Silver Spring, Maryland ever since. The first time you had your shoes taken off - how surprised were you to see that you still had toes?
Very. At the time I hadn't developed a sense of object permanence. So when my parents put my shoes on, I thought both my feet were gone for sure.
