| Introduction | This blog is inspired by another blogger by the name of Marcus. I was inspired to use the name Elmer Gantry by Cynthia Crossen who writes the wonderful "Readback" column for the Wall Street Journal. The following is an excerpt from her article which appeared in November 2006. " Elmer Gantry wasn't the first perfidious preacher, and he obviously wasn't the last. But how a religious leader becomes widely admired even though he condemns others for the very immorality he enjoyed hours earlier has never been traced more shrewdly than in Sinclair Lewis's 1927 satire, "Elmer Gantry." |
