IntroductionI am an African-American female in my late 20's woman resuming my pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree after an almost 9-year hiatus from college. A lot has changed in the near decade since I first landed on a college campus. Although students who are older first time or returning scholars are considered “non-traditional”, research shows that the average age of a undergraduate student is now about 26, most college campuses have yet to embrace the challenges those returning to or joining a campus after their late teens. I have a unique perspective (and maybe a bit of an advantage) as I also work at the University I’m attending, and can emphasize with both the students who are trying to learn with and around the distractions, obstacles, and opportunities that life is throwing at them, and with the professors that are trying to teach them. My goal for this blog was to bring together the resources, strategies and perspectives available to help all non-traditional students navigate higher education with ease. Help is out there.
