Introduction Mel Greenberg, who retired in April 2010 from The Philadelphia Inquirer in his 40th year, covers college and professional women’s basketball. Greenberg pioneered national coverage of the game, including the original Top 25 women's college poll. His knowledge as a historian of the modern era of the sport has earned him nicknames such as "The Guru" and "The Godfather," as well as induction into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, the Big Five Hall of Fame, The Temple Klein Media School Klein Hall of Fame, among others, and coming Sept. 10, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Gowdy Media Award for Print. He is also the USBWA’s women’s rep on the board, serving since 1990. Along the way, he has covered almost every national finals dating back to the era of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), when his first championship event to report was in 1976 at the finals at Penn State. He also has covered the WNBA extensively every summer since the pro league's beginning in 1997, as well as the former American Basketball League during its brief existence from 1996-98.
