IntroductionA major interest for much of my life, my first encounter with a ‘significant’ bird was at the age of seven: a Puffin near the Bass Rock, Scotland, in 1967. It took a few years for the birding bug to bite, but when it did there was no going back. In 1972, against my wishes, I was sent on a birdwatching holiday with my brother; I didn't even have binoculars. But my parents had spotted what I failed to recognise, and thereafter I was hooked. Despite the rival youthful attractions of the opposite sex, the music business, Lambrettas and much more - what one of my friends refers to as 'the wilderness years' - my enthusiasm for birding has never diminished. Having trained as a journalist, I set up my own publishing company and in 1992 founded Birdwatch. I have enjoyed running what has become Europe’s biggest monthly magazine for keen birders ever since. I do most of my birding in my home city of London, UK, but also love the Azores, the Western Palearctic generally and North America (especially Mexico). I count myself lucky that birds are still both work and pleasure, and that in Hazel, Ed and Ava, I have a wife and two children who enjoy watching them with me (within reason!).
