If mud is dirt plus water, what is clay?
Clay is a different sized particle, duh. But you are asking a geologist. Here's a field test for you. Take a bit and rub it against the back of your teeth. If you can feel the grains, it's not a clay-sized particle. So that's to say, you shouldn't be able to distinguish clay particles against your teeth with your tongue, but you can with sand grains, which make mud...
