Introduction | I used to refer to myself as a 'jack of all trades' until I got chatting at a party, to a senior establishment figure, not long after I'd left my staff job at the BBC. "You're clearly a polymath" he boomed, "you have a business portfolio and a deep understanding of defence, politics and foreign affairs!" Hmmmm, on the train home I wrote a list of all my sources of income and stuff I did in my spare time. It was surprisingly long, and was as detailed as it was varied in that I could justifiably label myself as a journalist, writer, broadcaster, producer, property designer and developer, media trainer, mentor, defence expert, taekwondo black belt, wife and a mother. But I'm not alone, it's just what women do nowadays. It's rare to find someone who doesn't possess a multitude of skills across a broad range of subjects. So here's to all the polymath mums out there, this is for you. |
