Introduction We are Arabian and Half-Arabian horse breeders on one of the ridges above Capitan, NM. Never heard of it? That’s where Smokey the bear was rescued by forest rangers. From our kitchen window we can see the beautiful Sacramento Mountains with Sierra Blanca watching over the valley where in 1950 there was a terrible forest fire. Up in a tree was poor little Smokey with burnt paws and fur crying for his mother who had long gone. The rangers said he fairly leapt into their arms as they reached him and took him in to be cared for. The whole town pitched in and Smokey became the spokes bear for all the creatures in the forest. At nearly 7000’ we felt this would be a perfect place for our farm. I worked for the local Inn and resort and my husband worked for the Village of Ruidoso. We are an oddity in this TB & QH racing community, but we don’t mind. As a victim of the recession, I was forced to give up my stressful life as a Controller for the never boring life of a full time rancher, and horse breeder. I think perhaps I got the better end of the deal. We are poorer, and I may eat eggs (home grown), rice & beans, but what a life.
