| Introduction | The author, AKA Susan Meehan, has lived in the District for 45 years. She and her husband bought their home in 1968 on a block then known as Stab Alley. That same year, she became part of the beginning of DC politics. Along with Dave Clarke and Marion Barry, she was elected to a post-riot, police-community relations board. When she found that the MPD needed a reliable source of municipal information, she wrote ANSWERS: A Problem Solver’s Guide to Living in Washington, DC, which she is now updating. She led a multimillion-dollar Dupont Circle downzoning that stabilized much of that neighborhood. For 12 years, she was an elected ANC Commissioner and At-Large Democratic State Committee member. In the first Barry Administration, she served as Ward Two Community Coordinator. From then until she retired, she was the District’s Patient Advocate for all persons in substance abuse treatment. She was runner-up for the District Government’s Employee of the Year Award. She graduated from Wellesley College and was an Economics Fellow at the Foreign Service Institute. She is a published poet, and is putting together a book of her poems, to be called Listening Through Irish Waters. |
