Teaching: Behind Closed Doors

About me

Introduction	Hello. I'm certified in both English and Special Ed., and have my MFA in writing. I've been teaching secondary school for three years and before that, college for an additional three years. I believe I have a unique perspective, in that I am both a committed teacher, a writer and a parent (of five children). I do see both sides - parent and teacher - and I feel strongly that we should be on the 'same team' in that we often have the same goals: The education and well-being of the children. I wish that we could join forces against some common enemies, such as high -stakes testing and administrative waste and stupidity. Of course, not all administrators are incompetent (my current principal is a very decent man and a good principal), and not all politicians are after their own political ends rather than the real educational gains of the child. But SO much of what goes on behind our closed doors is, I ultimately feel, a giant power struggle in which only two sides lose: The children and the teachers.
