| Introduction | My art reflects my reality – women that look like me, my family, sisterfriends, people I know, things I see on the street, stories, myths and legends. It is inspired by the untold and unappreciated stories (work, love, creativity, family, sisterhood, spirituality) of women, particularly women of color. My art does not always reflect the “majority” idea of beauty or femininity. Rather, it is an homage to unnamed women, mothers, grandmothers, caretakers, who we love and have loved and nurtured us through the ages. Children of every race, class and culture from the beginning of time play with dolls. Whether made of sticks, yarn, cornhusks, fabric or plastic, dolls are totem, talisman and secret-keeper; joyous, healing and iconic. They are the definitive plaything of childhood, the beginnings of imagination, the keepers of tales and tradition. I still play with dolls. |
